Protecting Your Home and Family: A Beginner's Guide to Responsible Carry
Every responsible gun owner shares the same starting point: the decision that the people you love come first. If you are a homeowner or parent in the Twin Cities metro thinking about your first permit class, you already have the most important qualification — you take this seriously. Here is how thoughtful training fits into a family-first approach to protecting your home.
Why Preparation Beats Reaction
In an emergency, you do not rise to the occasion — you fall to the level of your training. That principle drives everything we teach at Dante's Gun Class. A person who has thought through the legal, practical, and moral questions before a crisis is calmer, safer, and more effective than someone deciding in the moment.
Preparation is also about prevention. Most home defense success stories never involve a shot fired: a locked door, a practiced family plan, and a confident, lawful response are usually enough to end a threat before it begins.
Training Comes Before Equipment
New owners often spend hours researching firearms and accessories, then almost no time on education. We recommend the reverse. Equipment is replaceable; judgment is not. A training class teaches you:
- How to handle and store a firearm safely in a home with children or guests
- What Minnesota law actually says about carry and self-defense — in plain language, not legal jargon
- How to make sound decisions under stress
- What the Permit to Carry process involves from start to finish
If you do not yet own a firearm, a beginner-friendly class is still the right first step. Many students take the class first and choose their first firearm afterward, with far better information than a showroom brochure provides.
What Responsible Home Defense Looks Like
Responsible home defense is a system, not a single purchase:
- Secure storage. Firearms stored safely and accessibly only by authorized adults. Safe storage is both a family decision and a legal expectation in Minnesota.
- A family plan. Everyone in the household should know what to do and where to go during an emergency — including the youngest members.
- Legal knowledge. Understanding when force is justified, and when it is not, protects your family in more ways than one.
- Competence. Regular practice, honest self-assessment, and continued education.
None of these steps requires bravado. They require patience and consistency — the same qualities you already bring to the rest of your family life.
From Classroom to Carry Permit
Minnesota's Permit to Carry process is straightforward when you know the steps: complete a recognized training course, receive your certificate, and apply through your county sheriff's office. Our Permit to Carry & Home Defense Fundamentals class covers the full curriculum in a single four-hour session, taught in a small classroom capped at ten students so nobody gets lost in the crowd.
Start This Month
We are enrolling now for November sessions on the 14th and 28th, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at our North Metro training facility. The class is $95 plus a $20 range fee, and it includes your Minnesota Permit to Carry certification.
